507 Carat Large Diamond Discovered At The Cullinan Mine

A large 507.55 carat diamond was discovered at the Cullinan Diamond Mine on Thursday the 24th September 2009. This makes it one of the largest rough diamonds ever found.

This is the 18th largest rough diamond discovered in the world so far. The Cullinan Diamond with a weight of 3106 carats is the largest rough diamond ever found.It was also discovered in the same diamond mine in 1905.

The diamond is presently with experts for analysis and initial examination of the stone suggest that it is of exceptional color and clarity with a weight of about 100 grams

The diamond was also discovered along with three other large diamonds of similar quality weighing 168 carats, 58.5 carats and 53.3 carats. A 101.27 carat diamond was also discovered in the mine in May 2008.

Petra Diamonds is one of the worlds leading supplier of rough diamonds. Petra has a total resource base of 262 million carats. Three of the worlds most famous diamond mines have been acquired by Petra, these include the Cullinan, Williamson and Koffiefontein mines.

The Petra Diamonds Cullinan Consortium (PDCC) owns the Cullinan Diamond Mine. Petra has an initial 37% interest. Al Rajhi Holdings has another 37% initial interest. The Petra Diamonds Employee Trust has a 12% interest while  PDCC’s black empowerment partners, Thembinkosi Mining Investments (Pty) Ltd has a 14% initial interest
