Auction House Christie’s has announced the holding of its PARIS FINE JEWELS SALE, on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at their Paris auction venue, situated at 9 Avenue Matignon, 75008 Paris, France. A total of 197 lots will be on offer at the auctions, commencing at 3.00 PM on June 6, 2018, ranging in value from as low as EUR 600 (USD 703) to a maximum of EUR 150,000 (USD 175,658). The auction will be preceded by viewing of the lots at the same venue, from 1st June 2018 to 6th June 2018, viewing times being 10 AM to 6 PM on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd June, 2018; 2 PM to 6 PM on Sunday, 3rd June, 2018; 10 AM to 6 PM on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th June, 2018 and 10 AM to 12 PM on Wednesday, 6th June, 2018. The lots include a variety of jewels such as bracelets, brooches, earrings, necklaces, rings etc. set with colorless and colored diamonds, colored gemstones such as sapphires, rubies, emeralds, amethysts, citrine, onyx, peridot, spinel etc. and organic gemstones such as natural and cultured pearls, mother-of-pearls, corals etc.
SAPPHIRE LOTS
Top highlight of the sale based on estimates is a Sapphire Lot assigned LOT 183 and titled SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND RING, BY BOUCHERON, with an estimate of EUR 100,000 – 150,000 (USD 117,105 – 175,658). The platinum and yellow gold ring with French assay marks 950 for platinum and 750 for 18k yellow gold, is double claw-set on yellow gold with a cushion-cut blue sapphire, flanked by a tapered baguette-cut colorless diamond on the shoulders of the ring.
SSEF report no. 99390, dated 18 April 2018, and GGL report no. 18040090, dated April 23, 2018, state that the sapphire is of Kashmir origin with no evidence of heat or clarity enhancement.
Other significant Sapphire Lots include Lots 73 and 99.
LOT 73 – SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND BROOCH BY SCHLUMBERGER FOR TIFFANY – with an estimate of EUR 20,000 – 30,000 (USD 23,421 – 35,132) is another sapphire highlight of the sale. The 5.2 cm platinum and white gold brooch, signed Tiffany Schlumberger with French assay marks 950 for platinum and 750 for 18k white gold, is designed as a flower head, the petals set with circular-cut diamonds, centering around a pistil set with a cushion-cut blue sapphire weighing approximately 5.74 carats, surrounded by enameled gold stamens, ending in circular-cut diamond anthers. Gross weight of brooch 27.61 g.
SSSEF report no. 99388, dated 18 April 2018, and GGL report no. 18040091, dated 23 April 2018, state that the sapphire is of Kashmir origin with no evidence of heat enhancement.
LOT 99 – SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND RING – with an estimate of EUR 20,000 – 30,000 (USD 23,421 – 35,132) is another significant sapphire lot.
The 18k white gold and 18k yellow gold ring with French assay marks 750 for 18k white/yellow gold, is double claw-set on yellow gold with a cushion-cut blue sapphire weighing approximately 11.49 carats, flanked by a half-moon shaped diamond mounted on white gold on each side, on the shoulders of the white gold ring. Gross weight of ring 9.42 g,
GGL report no. 18020145 dated 26 February 2018, states that the sapphire is of Burma origin with no evidence of thermal enhancement.
COLORLESS DIAMOND LOTS
LOT 86 – DIAMOND RING – with an estimate of EUR 70,000 – 100,000 (USD 81,974 – 117,105) is the 2nd most valued lot of the sale and the top highlight among colorless diamond lots. The platinum ring with French assay mark 950 got platinum, is set with a round brilliant-cut, G-color, VVS2 clarity diamond weighing approximately 5.35 carats, flanked on each side by a baguette-cut colorless diamond on the shoulders of the ring. Gross weight of ring 4.95 grams.
GIA report no.2191134945, dated February 27, 2018 states that the 5.35-carat, round brilliant-cut diamond is G-colored and VVS2 clarity.
Following Lot 86, there are at least 12 Colorless Diamond Lots of decrease in estimates from high to low. Some significant Colorless Diamond Lots from these 12 Lots include Lots 197, 179, 79 and 75.
LOT 197 – DIAMOND PENDANT – with an estimate of EUR 70,000 – 100,000 (USD 81,974 – 117,105) is the 3rd most valued lot of the sale and the 2nd most valued diamond lot. The pendant is claw-set with a D-color, VVS1 clarity, pear brilliant-cut diamond weighing approximately 4.74 carats, on silver with assay no. 800. Gross weight of pendant is 2.12 g.
GIA report no. 1192146852 and a letter dated March 1 and 2, 2018, states that the 4.74-carat, pear brilliant-cut diamond is D-Color VVS1 clarity. Diamond type classification letter annexed to the report states that the diamond has been determined to be Type IIa.
Type IIa diamonds are the most chemically pure diamonds and often have exceptional optical clarity. They were first identified as coming from India and especially from the Golconda region, but have since been found in all diamond producing regions of the world. Among the most famous diamonds, Cullinan (530.20 carats) and Koh-i-noor (105.60 carats) are examples of Type IIa diamonds.
LOT 179 – DIAMOND RING, BY MAUBOUSSIN – with an estimate of EUR 60,000 – 80,000 (USD 70,263 – 93,684) is another significant colorless diamond lot. The 18k yellow gold ring signed Mauboussin Paris and numbered 48795 with French assay mark 750 for 18k yellow gold is set with a G-Colored, VS2 clarity, pear-shaped diamond weighing approximately 5.17 carats, highlighted by a baguette-cut diamond surround, the shoulders and upper hoop of the ring pave-set with circular-cut colorless diamonds. Gross weight of ring 13.52 grams.
GIA report no. 8495356, dated 27 February, 2018, states that the 5.17-carat, pear-shaped diamond is G-Color and VS2 clarity.
LOT 79 – TOI ET MOI DIAMOND RING – with an estimate of EUR 45,000 – 55,000 (USD 52,697 – 64,408) is another colorless diamond lot. The 18k white gold ring with French assay mark 750 for 18k white gold is set with two round brilliant-cut colorless diamonds weighing respectively 2.49 carats and 2.40 carats in a Toi et Moi setting. Gross weight of ring 8.02 grams.
LOT 75 –DIAMOND NECKLACE – with an estimate of EUR 30,000 – 50,000 (USD 35,132 – 58,553) is another significant colorless diamond lot. The 39 cm (15.3 ins) choker length, platinum and 18k gray gold rivière necklace, with French assay marks 950 for platinum and 750 for 18k gray gold, is set end to end with baguette-cut diamonds, with a secure clasp behind and the front set with a bouquet and ribbon bow set with baguette-cut, circular-cut and marquise-cut diamonds. Gross weight of the necklace is 58.59 grams.
COLORED DIAMOND LOTS
Top among the colored diamond lots is LOT 195 – A COLORED DIAMOND AND DIAMOND RING – with an estimate of EUR 30,000 – 40,000 (USD 35,132 – 46,842), the 15th most valued lot of the sale. The platinum ring with French assay marks PT850 is set with a fancy intense yellow, SI1 clarity, round brilliant diamond weighing approximately 4.05 carats, highlighted by a row of circular-cut diamonds on the edge of the gallery and the shoulders of the ring. Gross weight of ring 9.38 grams.
GIA report no. 1196134709, dated February 27, 2018, states that the 4.05-carat, round brilliant-cut diamond is natural Fancy Intense Yellow color with a clarity of SI1.
The other Colored Diamond Lot is LOT 175 – COLORED DIAMOND, DIAMOND, ONYX AND ENAMEL BROOCH, BY CARTIER – with an estimate of EUR 10,000 – 15,000 (USD 11,711 – USD 17,566). The 18k yellow gold Cartier brooch with French assay mark 750 for 18k yellow gold and numbered no.669891, features two birds perched on a branch embellished with black enamel; the beaks and eyes set with black onyx; the head, neck and front body pave-set with circular-cut colorless diamonds, the wings and the tail set with circular-cut yellow diamonds.
EMERALD LOTS
Top among the 18 Emerald Lots is LOT 184 – EMERALD AND DIAMOND RING, BY BOUCHERON – with a pre-sale estimate of EUR 25,000 – 35,000 (USD 29,276 – 40,987). The platinum and 18k grey gold ring with French assay marks 950 for platinum and 750 for 18k gray gold, is double claw-set on grey gold with an octagonal step-cut/emerald-cut emerald, flanked by a tapered baguette-cut colorless diamond on each shoulder of the ring. Gross weight of ring 5.02 g.
SSEF report no. 99391, dated April 18, 2018, states that the emerald possesses the characteristics of emeralds originating from the deposits of Colombia. The presence of minor oil treatment accepted in the trade, detected.
Other significant Emerald Lots include Lots 24 and 140.
LOT 24 – EMERALD RING – with an estimate of EUR 10,000 – 15,000 (USD 11,711 – 17,566) is another emerald highlight of the sale. GGL report no. 18020138, dated 26 February, 2018, states that the emerald exhibits characteristics of emeralds from the Colombian deposits. Minor conventional clarity enhancement indicated by presence of oil in fissures.
LOT 140 – EMERALD RING – with an estimate of EUR 10,000 – 15,000 (USD 11,711 – 17,566) is another emerald lot in the sale. RUBY LOTS
Top Lot among Rubies is LOT 148 – DIAMOND AND RUBY BROOCH – with an estimate of EUR 20,000 – 30,000 (USD 23,421 – 35,132). The 8 cm long, 18k white gold and 18k yellow gold brooch with French assay marks 750 for white gold and 18k yellow gold, is designed as a flower head with four overlapping petals, the center of each petal set with pave-set circular-cut colorless diamonds, highlighted by two rows of circular-cut rubies; the pistil set with a large colorless round brilliant-cut diamond; the short stalk of yellow gold arising from a main stem set with colorless baguette-cut diamonds; and four leaves represented by inverted pear-shaped colorless diamonds, three arising from a white gold branch of the main stem and one directly from the main stem. Gross weight of brooch 40.21 grams.
Other significant Ruby Lots Include Lots 149 and 190
LOT 149 – PAIR OF DIAMOND AND RUBY EAR CLIPS – with an estimate of EUR 10,000 – 15,000 (USD 11,711 – 17,566) is another ruby lot of the sale, similar in design to Lot 148. The Lot of matching design to the Ruby and Diamond Brooch of
Lot 148 and probably from the same demi-parure, consists of a pair of ear clips each 4.2 cm long, made of 18k white and yellow gold with French makers mark 750 and designed as flower heads of four petals each, as in Lot 148, each petal having a center pave-set with circular-cut colorless diamonds highlighted by a single row of claw-set, circular-cut rubies, the pistil set with a circular-cur ruby. Gross weight of ear clips 38.04 grams.
LOT 190 – PAIR OF RUBY AND DIAMOND EAR CLIPS – with an estimate of EUR 8,000 – 10,000 (USD 9,368 – 11,711) is another ruby lot of the sale. Each of the pair of 18k white gold ear clips with French assay marks 750, is set with a pear-shaped ruby as centerpiece, highlighted by a baguette diamond surround, the length of the baguette diamonds gradually increasing in size from the post fittings set with a square-cut diamond, so that the diamond surround roughly maintains the pear-shape.
GGL report nos. 18020143/1 and 2, dated 1 March, 2018, state that the rubies have characteristics of rubies from the deposits of Burma, without any treatment or heat enhancement.
NATURAL PEARL LOTS
LOT 122 – NATURAL PEARL, SAPPHIRE AND DIAMOND NECKLACE – with an estimate of EUR 15,000 – 20,000 (USD 17,566 – 23,421) is the top natural pearl lot of the sale. The five-strand natural saltwater pearl necklace, with the innermost row of length 36.5 cm (14.4 ins), equivalent to a Choker, consists of pearls varying in diameter from 3.7 mm to 5.8 mm, of varying shapes such as spherical, near-spherical and button shapes, the 14k yellow gold (585) and silver (800) clasp set with a cabochon sapphire embellished with old cut diamonds and rose cut diamonds and connected to the five strands on either side. The pearls have a white body color with pink overtones, excellent luster and orient in keeping with their saltwater origin. Gross weight of the necklace 57.95 grams.
LFG (French Gemology Laboratory) report no. 300378, dated 19 November, 2013, states that the pearls are natural pearls of saltwater origin.
This natural pearl necklace has an ancient historical provenance having once belonged to Princess Marie-Louise of Orleans, Queen consort of Spain from 1679 to 1689 as the first wife of King Charles II of Spain and later to Henriette of Saxe-Cobourg, Princess of Belgium, Duchess of Vendôme (1870-1948) who married Prince Emmanuel of Orléans and the 8th Duke of Vendôme in1896. The necklace being a rare natural saltwater pearl necklace with a royal provenance dating back to the late 17th century, will no doubt fetch a much enhanced price than the estimated price.
LOT 126 – NATURAL PEARL, EMERALD AND DIAMOND NECKLACE – with an estimate of EUR 9,000 – 12,000 (USD 10,539 – USD 14,053) is another natural pearl highlight of the sale. The 47 cm (18.5 ins), P single strand necklace is composed of 79 graduated natural saltwater pearls, ranging in diameter from 4.25 mm to 8.15 mm and the platinum (950) and 18k yellow gold (750) clasp behind bezel-set with a cut-cornered rectangular emerald-cut emerald, highlighted by a row of circular-cut diamonds, assuming the same shape as the central emerald. Gross weight of necklace 20.84 grams. The pearls have a white body color with pinkish overtones, with various shapes such as round, near-round and button and a luster and orient in keeping with the saltwater origin of the pearls.
SSEF report no. 69625, dated 2 September, 2013, states that the pearls are of natural saltwater origin.
LOT 132 – A STRAND OF NATURAL PEARLS AND A SINGLE CULTURED PEARL – with an estimate of EUR 6,000 – 8,000 (USD 7,026 – 9,368) is a natural pearl lot of the sale. The single strand of pearls without a clasp is composed of 73 natural saltwater pearls of various shapes, such as round, near-round and button, ranging in diameter from 3.7 mm to 8.3 mm and a single cultured pearl. The natural pearls have a white body color with a pink overtone and a luster and orient in keeping with their saltwater origin. Gross weight of clasp 13.77 grams.
LFG (French Gemology Laboratory) report no. 336335, dated April 18, 2018, states that 73 pearls in the strand are of natural saltwater origin and one single pearl is a cultured pearl.
CULTURED PEARL LOTS
Significant Cultured Pearl Lots include Lots 70, 68 and 58.
LOT 70 – CULTURED PEARL AND DIAMOND NECKLACE – with an estimate of EUR 20,000 – 30,000 (USD 23,421 – 35,132) is the top highlight of Cultured Pearl Lots.
The three-strand cultured pearl necklace, the inner row of length 29 cm (11.4 ins) equivalent to a Collar length necklace, is composed of gray cultured pearls, mostly spherical in shape, each row connected in front to a rectangular platinum plaque of geometric design, the circular central part set with oval-shaped, cushion-shaped, circular-cut and baguette-cut diamonds centering around a large circular-cut diamond, flanked on either side by identical geometric patterns set with baguette-cut, circular-cut and triangular-cut diamonds. The three rows are connected behind to the two halves of the 18k white gold clasp, out of which one half is set with circular-cut diamonds. Gross weight of Necklace 80.06 grams
LOT 68 – CULTURED PEARL DEMI-PARURE – with an estimate of EUR 10,000 – 15,000 (USD 11,711 – 17,566) is another cultured pearl highlight. The demi-parure is composed of a necklace, brooch and a pair of stud earrings. The 35 cm (13.8 ins) choker length, single-strand necklace, is composed of 26 perfectly spherical gray cultured pearls, varying in diameter from 12.1 mm to 13.8 mm.
The 21.2 cm (8.3 ins) long bracelet is composed of 17 perfectly spherical gray cultured pearls, varying in diameter from 11.47 mm to 12.1 mm. The bracelet can be connected to the necklace to increase its length to 56.2 cm (22 ins) equivalent to a Matinee length necklace.
The pair of stud earrings is each set with a single perfectly spherical gray cultured pearl with post and screw fittings on the rear side. Gross weight of demi-parure 122.38 g, 18K white gold (750) and 14K white gold (585) settings.
LOT 58 – CULTURED PEARL AND DIAMOND DEMI-PARURE – with an estimate of EUR 8,000 – 12,000 (USD 9,368 – 14,053) is another Cultured Pearl Lot in the sale. The demi-parure is composed of a necklace and a pair of earrings.
The 37.5 cm (14.8 ins) single-strand necklace is composed of 27 spherical and near-spherical, white cultured pearls with pink overtones, varying in diameter from 11.9 mm to 16 mm.
Each of the matching pair of earrings is set with a single spherical white cultured pearl with pink overtones, surmounted by three marquise-cut colorless diamonds, with post and screw fittings. Gross weight of the demi-parure is 103.91 grams. The settings are on 18K white gold (750).
