Sotheby’s New York December 07, 2021, Magnificent Jewels Sale promises to be a very exciting and memorable auction, given the array of important and distinguished private collections on offer, apart from superb vintage and modern classics by famed jewlery houses such as Van Cleef & Arpels, Cartier, Bulgari, Tiffany, Boucheron, Belperon etc.

According to Sotheby’s the sale also features a wide array of exceptional jewels to suit every taste and style. The auction house states that they are pleased to present one of the most significant collections of Bulgari Jewels ever to come to the market, fraturing impressive diamonds and colored stones, as well as a beautiful selection of Monete pieces, a vintage fashion brand known for its high-end jewelry that once dominated the market. For connoisseurs of design, Sotheby’s further states, we offer a highly important, newly rediscovered jewel by Louis Comfort Tiffany and modernist designs by Boucheron, Belperron, Fouquet and Templier.

Sotheby’s further states ths sale offers a variety of diamonds of every color – red, orange, pink, yellow, green and a wide spectrum of blues. Top lots among the colored diamonds are a 6.11-carat Fancy intense Blue diamond and a 6.69-carat Fancy Intense Pink Diamond, both of high clarity and pure unmodified hues. The colored diamonds are complemented by some outstanding whiter-than-white, diamonds of the purest water, Type IIa diamonds, including a stunning 62.65-carat pear-shaped diamond and a an elegant 26.54-carat, elongated emerald-cut diamond mounted by Bulgari. Superlative Colored Stones also feature in the Sale led by exceptionally vibrant Royal Blue Sapphires; a selection of top-quality, no-oil Colombian Emeralds and a great variety of richly-saturated Burmese and Mozambique Rubies.

GIA report bearing no. 2205963705, dated November 25, 2020 states that the diamond is Fancy Intense Pink, Natural color and VS2 clarity.

GIA report no. 5201974368 dated July 22, 2020, states that the central cushion-cut diamond weighing 3.01 carats is fancy vivid blue, natural color and VVS1 clarity. A letter accompanying the report states that the diamond has been determined to be Type IIb.

Two other reports bearing Nos. 2394294880 and 1399156842 respectively state that the heart-shaped diamonds are each D-color and VVS1 clarity.

US Ring size 6, stamped 750 for 18k white gold ring, is claw-set with a 62.65-carat, pear-shaped, D-Color, VVS2-Clarity diamond, with excellent polish and symmetry, flanked by two pear-shaped diamonds weighing 2.04 and 2.01 carats respectively.

GIA Reports bearing Nos. 2156657968and 1159680170 and dated respectively April 8, 2021 and April 7, 2021, state that the diamonds weighing 2.04 and 2.01 carats respectively, are D-Color and VS2-Clarity.

US Ring size 5, platinum ring is double-claw set with a 4.88-carat, oval modified brilliant-cut, Fancy Blue, VS-1 clarity diamond, surrounded and accented by an inner row of round-cut pink diamond and an outer row of round-cut near-colorless diamonds. The shoulders and upper hoop of the ring are also set with round-cut near-colorless diamonds.

Total weight of pink diamonds approximately 0.30 carats. The color of pink diamonds vary from Fancy to Fancy Deep Pink to Pinkish-Purple and clarity varies from VS-SI clarity.

Total weight of accenting near-colorless diamonds, approximately 1.45 carats, Color varying from F to G Color and Clarity VS.

GIA report bearing no. 6173126521 dated May 15, 2015 states that the diamond weighing 4.88 carats is Fancy Blue, Natural Color and VS1 clarity. A letter accompanying the report states that the blue diamond has been determined to be Type IIb.

US Ring size 5¼, Platinum ring, stamped PLAT for platinum, signed Bulgari, is claw-set with an emerald-cut, D-Color, VVS1-Clarity diamond, weighing 26.54 carats, flanked by two triangle-shaped, D-F Color, VS-Clarity diamonds together weighing 2.13 carats, and further accented by D-F color, VS clarity, baguette-cut diamonds weighing 0.36 carats.

GIA report bearing no. 6217947304 dated August 10, 2021 states that the emerald-cut diamond is D color, VVS1 clarity. Accompanying letter from the GIA staties that the diamond has been determined to be Type IIa.

The first colored gemstone highlight of the sale is LOT 19 – A Superb Emerald and Diamond Ring, with an estimate of USD1,500,000 – USD2,500,000.

US Ring size 5¾ platinum ring stamped PT950 for platinum, is claw-set with a central emerald-cut Emerald, weighing 9.97 carats, surrounded and accented by pave-set round colorless diamonds, the upper hoop of the ring also set with round-cut diamonds.

The emerald is medium-deep green, richly saturated, slightly included, with two minute surface-reaching inclusions.

AGL report bearing no. 1105964 dated January 23, 2020 states that the emerald is of Classic Colombian origin, with no clarity enhancement. A folio accompanying the report, attests to the rarity and importance of the stone and states that the emerald “possesses a remarkably high clarity, providing a superior degree of transparency.”

A secont report by SSEF bearing no. 112635 dated February 19, 2020 states that the emerald is of Colombian origin, with no clarity enhancement.

The accenting diamonds, estimated to weigh a total of approximately 1.50 carats, are approximately F-G color and VS clarity.

The next highlight of the sale is also a Colored Gemstone lot, bearing LOT NO – 18 and titled Boucheron, An Exceptional Sapphire and Diamond Ring, France.

US Ring size 5¾, platinum ring, signed Boucheron Paris, numbered X3125 with French Assay Marks for Platinum, is double-claw set with an emerald-cut blue sapphire, weighing 23.72 carats, flanked on either side by bullet-shaped diamonds on the shoulders and accented by single and rose-cut diamonds.

The sapphire is a vibrant medium deep blue, richly saturated, eye-clean with a veil of silk under one quadrant seen on close inspection. The diamonds, estimated to weigh a total of approximately 1.40 carats, are approximately G-H color, VS-SI clarity.

AGL report bearing no. CS 70653 dated December 15, 2015 states that the sapphire is of Classic Burmese origin, with no indications of heating. Accompanying letter states that this color variety of sapphire may also be called “royal blue” based on AGL reference standards, attesting to the rarity and importance of the sapphire and stating that the gem “exhibits a deep and richly saturated blue color.”

A second report by SSEF bearing no. 119465 dated November 9, 2021 states that the sapphire is of Burmese origin with no indications of heating. Accompanying letter attests to the rarity and importance of the sapphire and notes that the color and properties are characteristic of the finest sapphires from Mogok.

An extremely rare Red Diamond lot is the next highlight of the sale, assigned LOT No. 56 and titled Fancy Red Diamond and Diamond Ring, with an estimate of USD1,200,000 – USD2,200,000.

US Ring Size 6, platinum ring with the mounting stamped PLAT, is claw-set with a cut-cornered rectangular step-cut Fancy Red diamond weighing 1.03 carats, framed by four shield-shaped colorless diamonds, two on the shoulders of the ring and the other two on the other sides of the ring.

GIA report bearing no. 2215278365 dated February 9, 2021 states that the center diamond is Fancy Red, Natural color and SI1 clarity.
The accenting near-colorless diamonds are estimated to weigh a total of approximately 0.75 carat, and are approximately D-F color and VS clarity.

LOT 86 – Bulgari, Ruby and Diamond Necklace and Pair of Earclips

LOT 86 – Bulgari, Ruby and Diamond Necklace and Pair of Earclips – with an estimate of USD400,000 – USD600,000 is another stunning Colored Gemstone lot of the sale.


The 18k gold necklace having an internal circumference of 14 ½ inches equivalent to a COLLAR fitting tightly around the neck, is composed of arch-shaped links, the lower half of the necklace having bigger arches than the rear half, and each arch set with an oval-shaped ruby, framed and accented by round colorless diamonds.
The ear-clips are also similarly set with a central oval-shaped ruby surrounded by round-cut colorless diamonds. All pieces of the necklace are signed Bulgari, with maker’s marks, numbered C325, Earclips numbered C1340.


Estimated total weight of Rubies approximately 49.75 carats, The Rubies are medium to medium-deep, slightly to strongly purplish-red, slightly to moderately included.Total estimated weight of diamonds approximately 31.45 carats, Color approximately F-G Color, and VS Clarity.


Accompanied by two AGL reports: no. 1116930 dated August 18, 2021 stating that the 26 rubies in the necklace are of Burmese origin, numbers 2-7, 9, 10, 12-14, 18, 19, 22, 23 and 25 from the tongue with no evidence of heating and numbers 1, 8, 11, 15-17, 20, 21, 24 and 26 from the tongue with evidence of heating. No. 1116931 A and B dated August 18, 2021 stating that the two rubies in the earclips are of Burmese origin with no evidence of heating.

Another stunning Colored Gemstone Lot is Lot 98 – Van Cleef & Arpels | Mystery-Set Ruby and Diamond Brooch – with an estimate of USD300,000 – USD500,000.


The platinum brooch of dimensions 3¼ x 2 inches, signed VCA and numbered NY44020-1, circa 1970, is designed as a flower, with round colorless diamonds set at the center, and the petals embellished with mystery-set calibré-cut rubies. The detachable stem is set with baguette-cut colorless diamonds and the leaves are set marquise-shaped colorless diamonds.


The rubies are medium to medium deep slightly purplish red to red in color and slightly to moderately included. The round diamonds are estimated to weigh a total of approximately 5.85 carats and are approximately F-H color, VVS-VS clarity. The marquise-cut and baguette diamonds are estimated to weigh a total of approximately 2.75 carats and are approximately F-H color, VVS-VS clarity.
