Sotheby’s Hong Kong Important Jewels Live Auctiion Realizes Total Sale of USD 18.1 Million

Sotheby’s Hong Kong Important Jewels Live Auction held on 19 th July, 2022, featuring 136 Lots, from Lot Nos 201 to 337 realized a Sale Total of HKD 141,840,540 (USD 18.1 million), 99 Lots out of 136 lots selling at the auction, working out to 73%.

Top Lot of the sale based on price realized was Lot No. 322 – An Impressive Jadeite Bead and Diamond Necklace – by Jacob & Co. which sold for HKD 18,283,000 (USD 2.3 million). The Matinee Length necklace of length 535 mm (21 inches) is set with 35 slightly graduated jadeite beads, varying in diameter from 12.70 mm – 16.50 mm. The Jadeite beads are of soft and lustrous green colour and highly translucent, The 18k white gold clasp of the necklace is set with baguette-cut and brilliant-cut diamonds, with a total weight of approximately 7.70 carats with an average color-grade of H-Color and clarity-grade of VS-Clarity.

Hong Kong Jade & Stone Laboratory certificate no. KJ 104173(1-3),dated 15 June 2022, states that the jadeite tested are natural, known in the trade as “A Jade. Also accompanied by a Gubelin Report which confirms this. The necklace Signed JACOB&CO is also accompanied by a Jacob & Co. Certificate of Authenticity.

The next top seller of the sale was a Chopard Necklace bearing Lot No. 295 and titled Chopard Emerald and Diamond Parure, consisting of a Necklace, Pair of Earrings and a bracelet. The Lot sold within its estimate of HKD 8,000,000 – 12,000,000 for HKD 11,144,000 (USD 1.4 million).

The 15-inch (390 mm) Collar length Bib Necklace has a front of latticework design, set with oval, heart-shaped and brilliant-cut diamonds, embellished with nine heart-shaped emeralds. The clasp and hinged back is pavé-set with brilliant-cut diamonds. The Necklace signed Chopard is inscribed Au750 for 18 karat white and yellow gold. Oval, heart-shaped and brilliant-cut diamonds are stated to weigh approximately 41.29, 19.24 and 28.73 carats in total respectively; oval diamonds are about D-G colour, VVS-VS clarity; heart-shaped diamonds are mainly about F-H with a few H-I colour, VS-SI clarity; brilliant-cut diamonds are bright and lively.

Each of the pair of Pendant Earrings suspends a heart-shaped emerald with a spiral surmount set with seven round brilliant-cut diamonds, and provided with post and butterfly fittings.

The matching bracelet is made up of three rows of alternating heart-shaped emeralds and brilliant-cut diamonds. The length of the middle row is 170 mm and the two outer rows are 165 mm and 160 mm in length. The middle row has eight heart-shaped emeralds gradually decreasing in size and alternating with seven round brilliant-cut diamonds.

The two outer rows are set with seven heart-shaped diamonds each, gradually decreasing in size and alternating with six round brilliant-cut diamonds. Total number of emeralds in the bracelet is 22.

The total number of heart-shaped emeralds in the parure are 33 emeralds – 9 emeralds in the necklace + 22 emeralds in the bracelet + 2 emeralds in the pair of pendant earrings.

Total weight of emeralds approximately 162.94 carats. Three Gübelin reports nos. 22061108, 22061107/1 and 2, and 22061106, accompanying the lot, all dated 20 June 2022, state that all the emeralds are of Colombian origin, with indications of minor clarity enhancement; further accompanied by an appendix stating that the “emeralds possess a saturated and homogeneous colour, combined with an exceptional degree of transparency. A matched set of thirty-three Colombian emeralds of this size and possessing such a combination of characteristics is rare.” The Lot is accompanioed by two Chopard Certificates of Origin.


Another top lot of the sale, registering the third highest price of HKD 9,813,000 (USD 1.3 million) just above the lower estimate of HKD 9,000,000, was Lot No – 281. titled Diamond Pendent Necklace, Mount by Tiffany & Co.

The adjustable platinum necklace varying in length from 41cm to 44cm, suspends a 15.00 carat, pear-shaped, D-Color, Internally Flawless Clarity diamiond as a pendant, the neckchain spectacle-set with a brilliant-cut diamond on each side.

GIA report no. 2221179365, dated 10 June 2022, accompanying the Lot, states that the 15.00 carat diamond is D Colour and Internally Flawless. Diamond type classification letter also accompanying the Lot, states that the diamond is determined to be a Type IIa diamond, the most chemically pure type of diamond.

The mount is signed T & Co. and stamped PT 950 for platinum. The brilliant-cut diamonds are bright and lively.

Lot 201 – Graff Diamond Ring – with an estimate of HKD 6,400,000 – 8,000,000 sold within its estimate for HKD 7,560,000 (USD 963,000).

Ring size 3¾ platinum ring signed Graff, is double-claw set with a cut-cornered emerald-cut, D-Color, Internally Flawless diamiond weighing 11.02 carats, flanked by tapered baguette-cut diamonds on the shoulders of the ring. \

GIA report no. 13163313, dated 31 May 2022, accompanying the Lot, states that the 11.02 carat diamond is D-Colour, Internally Flawless with Excellent Polish and Symmetry. Diamond type classification letter also accompanying the Lot, states that the diamond is determined to be a Type IIa diamond, the most chemically pure type of diamond.

Two other top lots that smashed their estimates were Lot Nos 224 and 222. Lot No 224 titled “Diamond Ring – 20.09,” is a property from an important Japanese Collection, with an estimate of HKD 2,000,000 – 3,000,000 and sold much above the upper estimate for HKD 4,788,000 (USD 609,923).

Ring Size 6, platinum ring, stamped Pt900 for Platinuim, is claw-set with an emerald-cut, I-Color, SI-1 Clarity diamond weighing 20.09 carats. GIA report no. 5222466091, dated 1 June 2022, accompanying the Lot, states that the 20.09 carat diamond is I Colour and SI-1 Clarity.

Lot 222 is the other Lot that smashed the estimates, selling above the estimate of HKD 1,200,000 -1,500,000 for HKD 4,032,000 (USD 513,619). This Lot is titled Pair of Diamond Pendent Ear Clips – 9.26, 9.19 and 5.27 and 5.22.

Each of the Pendant Earclips suspends a pear-shaped diamond, weighing respectively 9.26 and 9.19 carats, and the center of the surmount set respectively with an emerald-cut diamond, weighing 5.27 and 5.22 carats. Each of the emerald-cut diamonds of the surmount is surrounded by eight pear-shaped smaller diamonds.

Two GIA reports no. 2438488147, dated 27 May 2022 and no. 6432488124, dated 30 May 2022, state that the 9.26 and 9.19 carat diamonds are I and J colour, and both VS2-Clarity respectively.

Two other GIA reports no. 6432488087, dated 24 May 2022 and no. 1438488051, dated 25 May 2022, state that the 5.27 and 5.22 carat diamonds are I and J Colour, and both VS1-Clarity respectively.

Some of the other Lots that did quite well at the auction are Lots 272, 280, 225 and 326.

Lot 272 – Bulgari Diamond Ring – 10.01 D – sold for HKD 4,788,000 (USD 609,942) which was just below the lower estimate of HKD 5,800,000.

Ring Size 5¾ Platinum Ring signed Bulgari, is double-claw set with a cushion brilliant-cut, D-Color, Internally Flawless Clarity diamond, weighing 10.01 carats, flanked by two pear-shaped diamonds on the shoulders of the ring.

GIA report no. 6173713950, dated 4 February 2022, states that the 10.01 carat diamond is D Colour, Internally Flawless with Excellent Polish and Symmetry. Diamond type classification letter accompanying the report states that the diamond is determined to be a Type IIa, the most chemically pure type of diamond.

Lot 280 – Imperial Green Jadeite and Diamond Ring, with an estimate of HKD 5,000,000 – 8,000,000, sold below the lower estimate for HKD 3,906,000 (USD 497,570).

Ring size 6½, 18k white gold ring, is claw-set with an oval jadeite cabochon of vivid emerald green colour and very good translucency, weighing 31.22 carats, the gallery decorated with brilliant-cut diamonds, whose total weight is 0.57 carats. The dimensions of the oval jadeite cabochon are 22.27 x 17.60 x 10.39mm.

SSEF report and appendix letter no. 123207, dated 13 June 2022, accompanying the Lot, states that the jadeite is with no indications of treatment and the colour may also be called “imperial green” in the trade. The appendix letter further states that “The homogeneous and vivid green colour, is poetically also referred to as “imperial green” in the trade. A natural jadeite-jade of this size and quality can be considered very rare and exceptional.”

Lot 225 – Diamond and Sapphire Ring-10.11, with an estimate of HKD 3,800,000 – 5,000,000, sold within the estimate for HKD 4,410,000 (USD 561,786).

Ring Size 6¼, Platinum Ring, is claw-set with a pear brilliant-cut, D-Color, Internally Flawless Clarity diamiond, weighing 10.11 carats, flanked by two pear-shaped blue sapphires.

GIA report no. 2191875410, dated 13 December 2018, states that the 10.11 carat diamond is D Colour, Internally Flawless Clarity, with Excellent Polish and Symmetry. The Pear-shaped blue sapphires are of medium slightly violetish-blue colour and strong saturation, very clean to the unaided eye.
