The International Diamond Trade

Pride of place has been given to the diamond industry. The evolution of the diamond industry is given prominence, with its origins in ancient India (see Koh-i-Noor Diamond) in the 4th century B.C., giving details of diamond mining in the Eastern Deccan regions of South and Central India, including the famous Golconda mines near Hyderabad in Southern India. Another important source of diamonds in the world was the Kalimantan Province in Indonesia, where diamonds were discovered in the 14th century A.D. (see Trisakti Diamond and Matan Diamond). When the Dutch colonized Indonesia in the 17th century, the industry was already well established. The Dutch East India Company which was involved in the diamond trade, exported large quantities of diamonds to the Netherlands, laying the foundation for the development of Amsterdam as an international diamond-cutting and trading center. From the 14th century to the early 18th century both India and Indonesia were the main source countries for diamonds in the world. As diamond resources in India gets depleted after centuries of mining, a new player emerges in the international diamond industry, Brazil, where diamonds were discovered by the Portuguese colonialists in the early 18th century. Diamonds exploited from Brazil reached Portugal and other countries of Europe in large quantities in the 18th and 19th centuries. (see Star of the South Diamond). Then comes the greatest player in the diamond industry in modern history, Southern Africa, where diamonds were discovered in the mid-1860s. De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd. was incorporated in 1888, which takes control of most of the diamond mines in Southern Africa, and eventually forms the Central Selling organization, that controls much of the world’s trade in diamonds today (see Centenary Diamond).

Incidentally, the historic pearl fishing grounds, in the Gulf of Mannar, between India and Sri Lanka, was the hub of the international natural pearl industry for over 4,000 years, together with the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, and was based mainly on the species of pearl oyster known as Pinctada radiata. Pearls that entered the royal courts of Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt and later the Roman, Greek and Byzantine empires originated in this region. Subsequently, pearls from this region also entered  the courts of emperors of the Persian Empire, the Mogul Empire of India, and the Ottoman Empire of Turkey. The South China Sea was also a source of natural pearls based on the species Pinctada maxima, and these pearls entered the courts of the ancient Chinese Emperors.
